I picked this up recently with the intention of only being interested in the martial arts aspect of the book。 I intended to gather knowledge regarding Bruce’s style of training etc… However, it was interesting also to read Bruce’s philosophical perspective。 His approach to life was obviously based on Buddhist/Eastern principles and much of what he writes, accidentally on his part I’m sure, demonstrates the major difference between Eastern philosophies and Christianity very well。 One line in part I picked this up recently with the intention of only being interested in the martial arts aspect of the book。 I intended to gather knowledge regarding Bruce’s style of training etc… However, it was interesting also to read Bruce’s philosophical perspective。 His approach to life was obviously based on Buddhist/Eastern principles and much of what he writes, accidentally on his part I’m sure, demonstrates the major difference between Eastern philosophies and Christianity very well。 One line in particular Bruce specifically discusses riding the wave of good and evil, of not wasting energy attempting to denote between the two。 You might remember his most famous speech where he posits that one should “be like water”? The same point is being made there, that man should be adaptive in an all-pervading sense。 This diverts from the Christian emphasis on discernment, and the ability to recognize good and evil in the world。 I don’t intend to use Goodreads as a place to throw around my tinfoil hat theories, but the 60’s and 70’s in America seemed to really bring this discrepancy to the forefront of things through pop culture and the popularizing of eastern philosophy。 It almost seems to me that removing the moral compass of God our Creator from the asceticism and beliefs of Christians by equating all religions via a sort of blending together of them, was always their agenda, and what’s more, I would posit Bruce was used to the same end。 Whether he knew it or not。 I heard it best from a video I once watched, when a man said that a Buddhist would walk past someone being raped or murdered and would not intervene so as to not tether themselves to a karmic weight of any sort。 A Christian on the other hand, would have the duty of standing in the face of obvious evil, intending to stop it。 If that discrepancy is removed or blurred, the snowball of “riding the wave of good and evil” and a declining moral compass starts rolling fast… as we’ve seen in America since the 1960’s。 。。。more

My best friend in high school read this after he had to drop out of our Tae Kwon Do classes。 Bruce Lee inspired him so much, he dedicated his life to the martial arts, practice and lifestyle。 I sparred with him after his life change but surrendered the victory when he repeatedly kicked me in the face。 Each time I didn't see it coming。 I still don't know where it came from。 This all happened after we saw "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" in theatres。 That kid went on to join the military, finish an M My best friend in high school read this after he had to drop out of our Tae Kwon Do classes。 Bruce Lee inspired him so much, he dedicated his life to the martial arts, practice and lifestyle。 I sparred with him after his life change but surrendered the victory when he repeatedly kicked me in the face。 Each time I didn't see it coming。 I still don't know where it came from。 This all happened after we saw "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" in theatres。 That kid went on to join the military, finish an MBA with the money from the government, and became a successful business-man living a high-class life style with a beautiful wife in a beautiful home。 He fulfilled his dreams, everything he had wanted when we were kids walking the streets and going from home to home smoking weed and doing irresponsible kid-stuff。I discovered Bruce Lee in a life-changing way recently (about four years ago)。 I haven't gotten rich or anything。 I'm already forty-two。 I did stop drinking and have developed a healthier mind, and have found deep peace and confidence, and have overcome character flaws I never had been able to beat before。 I joined an online Kung-Fu class and as I practiced, my mind opened to what I never believed I could become, not outwardly as in through the eyes of society, but in myself, and in my relations to others。 Of all things, I have learned to live a life of love。 I never expected that from Kung Fu, from Bruce Lee。Here are a two quotes from this book that helped change my life as I applied them, and as practicing Wing Chun Kung Fu helped me understand:"Nothingness cannot be defined; the softest thing cannot be snapped。""Consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the execution of all physical action。" (I have applied this to all action, mental, emotional, spiritual and physical)。These two quotes started me on a different path in life。 I am so grateful to God for Bruce Lee's influence, in the world, and in my personal life。 He had true wisdom and that wisdom has been preserved in these pages。 。。。more

Самите технически детайли на това как да изпълниш ритник, финт и така нататък (което е и преобладаващата част от книгата), не ми бяха особено интересни, но философията на Брус Лий за живота е много готина и затова давам 4 звезди。 😎

I love Bruce Lee and his book gave me a great insight into him and his way or Tao。 I first read this in grade school when I took karate and again as an adult in Special Forces。 It taught me the natural flow and to incorporate everything I had learned over a lifetime of practicing some form of Martial Art。 It has drawings and diagrams to better understand what he describes。

Be water, my friend。 When I was young and practicing martial arts I turned to this book for techniques and to find out what JKD is。 As an adult, having suffered a back injury like Bruce, I come to this book for his philosophy and how he turned a stumble into a stepping stone。 Thank you Bruce for these books you left us。 They help more than you know。

I’ve stared at this book for 10 years from my husbands collection。 I finally picked it up。 I’ve never practiced martial arts, but I appreciate the tradition, form, and respect。 Bruce Lee accomplished so much at 32, and to see how insightful he was at such a young age is beyond impressive。 I have highlighted so many quotes which I will take with me in helping me understand myself better。 I wish I picked up this book years ago。

The book copies a lot of material from other books。 This is like a notebook of Bruce Lee, where he took notes of the best ideas and philosophies from different books。 All of the ideas and concepts here。 I already read it from other books。 It is a shame a book like this is still sold

If you've studied martial arts in the twenty-first century like me, you're going to recognize the bare bones of what is known today as MMA: punching, kicking, kneeing, wrestling, grappling, submissions, etc。While it technically isn't a training book, there is a pretty wide array of moves and techniques broken down into words and segments。 Enough for it to be super impressive。 Bruce Lee passed over twenty years before the birth of MMA and right away he could see the futility of "styles"。 Why woul If you've studied martial arts in the twenty-first century like me, you're going to recognize the bare bones of what is known today as MMA: punching, kicking, kneeing, wrestling, grappling, submissions, etc。While it technically isn't a training book, there is a pretty wide array of moves and techniques broken down into words and segments。 Enough for it to be super impressive。 Bruce Lee passed over twenty years before the birth of MMA and right away he could see the futility of "styles"。 Why would you study a "style" when you can study them all and concentrate them into a deadly hybrid? Lee says it in the end: Jeet Kune Do is just a name。 Forget the name。 It's the ideas that matter。It's the ideas which are interesting too。 Lee was a fan of the idea that the self gets in the way of martial arts。 That you have to "empty yourself" in order to get filled up。 I love that metaphor。 That you can't "want" things when you fight and you can't "not want" things。 You have to be empty and let the situation guide you wherever it may。 I was glad to read it even at 38 with a bagage of martial arts behind me。 Sometimes, it's good to go underneath it all。 。。。more

Neat little reference book that gives you some insight into Lee's personality and priorities。 The brief, aphoristic snippet form lends the book a brisk pace。 You'll learn nothing useful in terms of how to defend yourself, as all Lee presents you with is a series of static photos and diagrams that provide little more than set-piece hypotheticals。 But still, it's as close to an autobiography of Bruce Lee as you're ever going to find。 Neat little reference book that gives you some insight into Lee's personality and priorities。 The brief, aphoristic snippet form lends the book a brisk pace。 You'll learn nothing useful in terms of how to defend yourself, as all Lee presents you with is a series of static photos and diagrams that provide little more than set-piece hypotheticals。 But still, it's as close to an autobiography of Bruce Lee as you're ever going to find。 。。。more

Brilliant。 Jeet Kune Do is one martial art I have never even dabbled in。 One day, though。 Bruce was a fan of getting to the point。 He wasn't so into the flashy stuff, which I admired。 He prized speed over beauty when it came to a fight。 As fighting is very much the opposite of a dance (at least in most cases。 There are some exceptions), he was ahead of his time when it came to that mindset。 Great book for any fan of his, or anyone who currently trains in the art。 Brilliant。 Jeet Kune Do is one martial art I have never even dabbled in。 One day, though。 Bruce was a fan of getting to the point。 He wasn't so into the flashy stuff, which I admired。 He prized speed over beauty when it came to a fight。 As fighting is very much the opposite of a dance (at least in most cases。 There are some exceptions), he was ahead of his time when it came to that mindset。 Great book for any fan of his, or anyone who currently trains in the art。 。。。more

Yes I’m a Bruce Lee fan。 But this eclectic read of philosophy and ‘how-to’ on boxing is nothing short of a true original。 Much of the advice and how-to openly references other boxers and styles。 Much to my surprise grappling, Ju Jitsu, and conventional boxing is incorporated into Jeet Kune Do。 My only criticism is references by Lee to ‘spirituality’ several times but little expansion on what his POV is other than references to Krishnamurti, Zen and Taoism (and of course ones relationship to body Yes I’m a Bruce Lee fan。 But this eclectic read of philosophy and ‘how-to’ on boxing is nothing short of a true original。 Much of the advice and how-to openly references other boxers and styles。 Much to my surprise grappling, Ju Jitsu, and conventional boxing is incorporated into Jeet Kune Do。 My only criticism is references by Lee to ‘spirituality’ several times but little expansion on what his POV is other than references to Krishnamurti, Zen and Taoism (and of course ones relationship to body and mind)。 A personal pet peeve also is that Bruce has a Southpaw stance and JKD pushes this stance for right handers/kickers making it a little more tricky if you’re naturally orthodox。 Other than this, an incredible insight into the mans’ Way / Tao! 。。。more

I was given this book by the loser of a drunken (but friendly) scrap。 The loser told me that this book would teach me all I needed to know about fighting。 I read it。 It was very clear and detailed for a book, and the pictures/diagrams of the actions were very helpful。 However, I do not think this book is the Bible of Combat or anything like that。 Most of the techniques taught can now be found on YouTube, often with better teachers/explanations than this now-outdated book。
